This morning was Aiden and Roman’s first trip to the dentist; Scott took the morning off because I had no idea how either of them would react, plus I would have to juggle Lucas.
We have been talking it up for unite some time about how the dentist is going to look in their mouths and count their teeth. They both seemed game…until this morning. Aiden kept saying, “no dentist, no count my teef.” So when we get there and get settled in, they were loving life as they played in the waiting room with all of the trucks and the hygienist talked about all the prizes they would get. Once we got back to the exam room, Roman jumped right in the exam chair and looked happy as can be holding the little mirror.
So excited:
Roman decided he was done with the chair and ran off so we started with Aiden. Well, Aiden was a rock star. He picked put his toothpaste flavor- they seriously had over 10 flavors (cookie dough was an option!) and Aiden said yes to half of them. He sat on my lap and the hygienist count his teeth, brush them, use the suction and water attachment, and even allowed her to floss his teeth and didn’t even flinch (Apparently I should be flossing their teeth already-oops, my bad). Afterwards, he looked up at me and said, “Mommy, it not hurt.” And then got to pic out his prizes and toothbrush. Both of the boys have always been very good with their doctors but I was a bit nervous since this was a very different experience for them. I seriously could not believe how amazing Aiden was for his cleaning.
Mr Cool:
We let Aiden loose and then I went to get Roman for his turn. Well, his excitement had changed to total refusal and I literally had to restrain him in my lap. The kid would not stop screaming. The hygienist wasn’t able to brush or count his teeth, so she had the dentist come back and try to get him to cooperate. Now, I don’t think he was scared, I just think he didn’t want to be sitting there. The waiting room, with all of the big trucks, was a much cooler hang out. I must say, I was very impressed with the dentist. You could tell he’s used to children screaming at him because he just sat there holding Roman, asking him questions, not letting him go until he calmed down. We eventually got his exam completed with three of us holding him and when Roman’s exam was finished, he was standing next to the chair picking out his prizes and was all smiles. I swear these toddlers have multiple personalities, they switch it on and off in a nanosecond.
No cavities for either of the, Roman has a “type 2” bite, which apparently is an overbite, so we’ll see how that looks when he’s older. Aiden’s top teeth do not meet his bottom due to his thumb sucking (which we need to gradually start working on), and his teeth have less room in his mouth so we will see how that will play out when his adult teeth come in.
I am definitely glad we went to a pediatric dentist instead of our family dentistry practice. Nothing phased them (and Roman is loud, and stubborn), they were great with the kids and plenty of toys and games for a range of ages. Fingers crossed for two cooperative kids when we go back in 6 months, or is that just crazy talk?
I think I just got a peek into my future.
